LED Technology

LED (Light Emitting Diode) is a diode composed of the superposition of several layers of semiconductor material that emits light in one or more longitude waves (colors) when it is correctly polarized.

Ever-evolving LED technology has many and very diverse applications. Nowadays, it can be found in all types of devices such as: car optics, televisions, computer screens, signaling systems, home lighting, and outdoor lighting. LED is a common feature in our everyday environment.

LED technology reduces consumption significantly and heightens light energy performance, between 80 and 130 lumens per watt (lm/w) and optimizes chromatic performance (CRI =80). Its lifetime is estimated at 50,000 hours of use, obviating the need of replacement for at least 25 years (based on an average use of 5 hours/day).

One of the most significant features of LED systems is the high level of control which they offer, making it possible to manage the operation and brightness according to the needs or requirements of the user.

Apart from the quality and high performance afforded by LED technology, it is necessary to consider the area to be illuminated. With the aim of achieving maximum efficiency, optics must be designed to focus the flow of lighting on the intended location, allowing for differences among the areas to be illuminated such as bicycle paths, pedestrian walks, parks, roads, gardens, and so forth.

At EKIONA Solar Lighting, we carry out an extensive study of the area to be illuminated for the purpose of adapting the lighting solution to the specifications of our customers.

Fluorescent Lamp

The light generated by fluorescent lamps is very similar to daylight and is used widely for indoor lighting.

Fluorescent lighting system technology (low-pressure mercury vapor) has an acceptable lighting performance of 60-80 lumens per watt (lm/w) and good chromatic performance (CRI=60). Its lifetime, however, is very low, approximately 7,500 hours.

Also noteworthy is the low level of regulatory control that this type of lighting offers. An additional disadvantage is the need to include ballasts and starters in this type of lighting system in order for it to operate properly.

Sodium Lamp

The use of this technology is widespread in outdoor lighting. It is comparable to LED but with a few drawbacks; namely, its short lifetime (8,000-10,000 hours), and poor control of same.

With sodium vapour lamps, we are able to distinguish between low and high pressure systems.

The chromatic performance of low-pressure sodium vapor lamps is very low (CRI=0), making it impossible to adequately distinguish colors. High-pressure lamps have a higher chromatic performance (CRI = 25) and provide better quality color reproduction.

Given its operative technology, turning on a bulb is not instantaneous; a certain amount of time is required, say 5 or 10 minutes to achieve full performance.
